Ibiza / Eivissa

Ibiza harbour, Baleares islands, Spain

Ibiza has a reputation as a party island, but there is much more to Ibiza than its excellent nightclubs. The island is the closest of all the Balearic islands to mainland Spain and has a 200 km / 125 mile coastline, with many small coves and over 50 stunning beaches. There are plenty of tourism and tourist information offices situated in the towns of Ibiza and these provide up-to-date information about Ibiza tourist attractions, museums, events, Ibiza festivals, travel tips, sightseeing and general Ibiza tourism and tourist information.

Hotels on the island range from convenient Ibiza budget lodging to luxury accommodation in Ibiza, both on the seafront and inland. Finding accommodation can be difficult, especially during the peak tourist season (July to August) and therefore booking your Ibiza hotel reservation in advance is advisable and virtually compulsory in high season and Ibiza hotel discounts may be available for advance bookings.
Ibiza town is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the whole of Europe and is the largest and most beautiful town on the island, including a stunning cathedral and many fabulous restaurants and chic bars. Nearby there are also many old stone cottages on the island's hilly countryside and walking in this area is popular.

The beautiful island of Ibiza boasts an average of 300 days of sunshine each year. Ibiza is blessed by a hot Mediterranean sun that is complemented by cool, refreshing sea breezes and the winters are quite mild. This, combined with numerous excellent beaches, with fine golden sand, clear blue seas and exceptional nightlife means that Ibiza is understandably a popular destination for tourists. The pace of life for locals on Ibiza still remains relaxed and moves at a gentle pace, embracing the tourism trade. Ibiza offers so much for the visiting tourist, both young and old.

The incomparable quality of Ibiza’s and Formentera’s waters - Illes Balears
The Balearic Islands Government has launched a plan for cleaning its waters in winter as a complement to the Plan for Quality Bathing Waters in effect during high season so that visitors to the Pitiusan Islands can enjoy Ibiza’s and Formentera’s waters all year round. The plan involves cleaning 226 Balearic beaches on a weekly basis, a total of 97.7 kilometres of coastline, 38.6 of which can be found on Pitiusan shores. The cleaning brigades remove the solid waste on beaches by hand, except for the seaweed deposited on the shore, which serves to preserve the sand during winter.

Cleaning each one of the beaches in the islands of Ibiza and Formentera once and even twice a week has become increasingly important, as more and more residents and tourists are using them at different times of the year.

Clean waters along the Balearic coastline is a priority for the Balearic Islands Government. Residents and tourists who visit Ibiza and Formentera appreciate the attention the Pitiusan waters receive and their clean condition. Many of the beaches in Ibiza and Formentera have been awarded blue flags for their limpid waters and spectacular seabeds which visitors as well as residents can enjoy all year round.

The immense value of Ibiza’s historical heritage - IBIZA  More and more tourists visit the Pitiusan Islands’ major historical buildings each year.

Ibiza’s and Formentera’s historical monuments are an indispensable part of our roots, character, culture and heritage. In recent years, the Pitiüsan Islands have been making strenuous efforts to diversify and add its rich heritage to its existing offer.

A record number of approximately 50,000 people visited our most emblematic monuments in August 2006, proof of the wide range of visitors’ interests beyond simple leisure activities. The most popular historical monument was the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Ibiza, which received 22,775 visitors, followed by the Church of Sant Josep de Sa Talaïa with 9000 visitors and the Church of Sant Francesc de Sa Tanca Vella with 7000 visitors. The fourth most popular monument was Ibiza’s Ethnography Museum, located on Puig de Missa in Santa Eulàlia d'es Riu, which welcomed 2000 visitors and the fifth was Molí Vell de la Mola with around 1800 visitors, followed close behind by the Church of Sant Miquel with 1700. The Churches de Jesus and Sant Antoni de Portmany received almost the same number of visits, approximately 1200, Formentera’s Ethnography Museum received 988 and Museo Barrau 910. The caves of Santa Agnès de Corona and the caves d'es Culleram ranked last, with 300 and 353 visits respectively.

This study was conducted by the Ibiza and Formentera Island Council’s Ministry of Heritage, which is directed by Joan Marí Tur.

Year alter year, the unique buildings in the Pitiusan Islands have aroused enormous interest, both among islanders as well as among tourists who visit us.

Adventure Sports Ibiza

Although much of the fuss about Ibiza revolves around the nightlife - which more or less precludes doing anything during the days - there are other things to be done, places to go, people to meet and fun to be had.

The most obvious are the many beaches. Some are inaccessible without the luxury yacht, others are difficult to find without a car, but hey, this is an island so there are still plenty more to choose from and most of those listed can be reached on public transport. Nb: Public transport here includes little ferries that run along large sections of the coast dropping people off to various beaches and then collecting them again at sunset.

For the terminally fit we are working on a section describing the most beautiful walks on the island. Many follow the coastline offering a paddle to weary feet. Others scale the mountains or follow the clifftops offering spectacular views.

We have listed the enormous variety of other adventure activities available under three categories - water sports, land sports and motor assisted sports. When you have completed all of them, please contact us for your prize - an Ibiza holidays badge (equivalent in status to a 'Blue Peter' badge) and an invitation to become a regular member of our information updating team!
